November 15 Poem

Upper East Side, New York City, Election Day 2016

Months fraught with tension,

too much anger, not enough love—

she emerged onto the street

and faced her world, the

old money East Siders with

their fancy hats and painted faces,

the construction workers,

the protestors,

the working professionals

in their perpetual rush,

and she loved them all,

wanted to embrace them all,

and thank them all

for caring and believing

and having opinions

even when they differed

from hers.

The sun slanted down

between the buildings

and illuminated

her beautiful face,

and her heart was full

on that Autumn day.
